Reddit, forums and reviews: why they shape what AI says about your brand

Quick answer

Why do Reddit, forums and reviews shape what AI says about your brand?

Reddit, forums and reviews shape what AI says about your brand because assistants build answers from sources they treat as independent, and those are where people describe brands in their own words. In Peec AI's analysis of 30 million sources, Reddit was the most-cited domain across major assistants. Yet Profound's data puts it at just 3.11 per cent of citations, and Muck Rack found earned media made up 84 per cent. At IW Agency, we think brands earn a better picture by answering openly and correcting wrong sources, and by asking for reviews without astroturfing.

Why do Reddit, forums and reviews shape what AI says about your brand?

AI assistants build their answers from sources they treat as independent. Reddit threads, forums and review sites are where people describe brands in their own words, so assistants draw on them heavily.

In Peec AI's analysis of 30 million sources, Reddit was the most-cited domain across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Review platforms such as Yelp and G2 appeared often in recommendation queries (Search Engine Land on the Peec AI study, 2026). Profound's data also puts Reddit first across answer engines from August 2024 to October 2025, at 3.11 per cent of all citations (Profound, 2025). Both companies sell AI visibility tools.

Reddit is the biggest single domain, but at 3.11 per cent it is still a small share of what assistants cite. Muck Rack analysed more than 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It found that earned media accounted for 84 per cent of citations and paid content for 0.3 per cent (Muck Rack, 2026). Reddit content also feeds the models themselves. Reuters reported in 2024 that Google pays Reddit $60 million a year to train its AI, though neither company had commented at the time (Search Engine Land, 2024).

At IW Agency, we think the lesson is bigger than "get on Reddit". AI repeats what others say about you when you are not in the room, and no media budget changes that. Brands improve the description by taking part openly and fixing what is wrong at the source.

Conclusion: AI describes you in other people's words. Earn better words.

What do you need before you start?

You need three things before you start: a baseline of what assistants say today, a map of where your category talks, and a written rule that everything is done openly.

  1. A baseline. Run the questions buyers actually ask in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode.

  2. A source map. List the subreddits, forums, review sites and publications that keep appearing in the baseline. Platforms differ. ChatGPT favoured Wikipedia, Reddit and editorial sites, while Google leaned towards Facebook and Yelp. Perplexity emphasised Reddit, LinkedIn and G2 for B2B queries (Peec AI via Search Engine Land, 2026).

  3. A no-astroturfing rule. Astroturfing is disguising content made by a brand as independent voices from customers or users. Write the rule down and have the brand owner sign it.

    • No fake accounts.

    • No paid posts disguised as users.

    • No hand-picking who gets asked for a review.

Forum communities spot sock puppets quickly. The screenshots outlast the campaign.

How do you answer where people already talk about you?

Answer openly, under your brand's name, in the threads that already discuss you. Then answer the question people actually asked.

  1. Find the threads.

    • Search your brand name, your product names and the category questions where you should appear.

    • Start with threads the assistants cited in your baseline.

  2. Say who you are. Post from a clearly named brand account, or from a named employee who states where they work.

  3. Answer the question, not the brief. Give facts and a useful link. Leave the slogans out. If someone has a problem, solve it in public.

  4. Respect the room. Many communities restrict self-promotion. Read the rules and ask the moderators first.

Someone asks in a food forum whether a biscuit brand has changed its recipe. The brand replies with what changed, why it changed and where to find the full ingredient list. That reply becomes the most useful text in the thread, and it is the text an assistant can quote.

How do you correct what AI gets wrong?

Correct the source, not the chatbot. Find where the wrong claim comes from, then fix it or outweigh it there.

  1. Trace the error. Ask the assistant for its sources and read the pages it cites.

  2. Fix what you own. Update outdated facts on your website, review platform profiles and directory listings. See what a company website needs in the AI era.

  3. Request, don't rewrite. On Wikipedia and similar platforms, propose corrections through their conflict-of-interest process instead of editing your own entry.

  4. Give journalists the facts. Earned media is the largest share of what assistants cite. In Muck Rack's 2026 analysis, questions about industry trends drew on journalism in 46 per cent of responses.

  5. Reply where it started. Answer the original post calmly, with the facts and a source.

The strongest correction is a brand clear enough to be described correctly without your help. Our work with Morakniv starts from that kind of idea: standing for something different in a world increasingly willing to compromise on quality.

How do you earn reviews without gaming them?

Ask every customer, at the moment they have used the product, and make leaving a review take less than a minute.

  1. Ask everyone. Asking only the customers you expect to be happy is review gating. It also makes the profile less believable.

  2. Pick the moment. Good moments are after delivery, after first use and after a support case is solved.

  3. Send one link. Point to the platform your buyers and the assistants actually use, according to your source map. That might be G2 for B2B software, or Google or Yelp for local services.

  4. Reply to criticism. A calm, specific answer to a bad review shows how you behave when something goes wrong.

  5. Never pay for praise. Fake reviews break platform rules and EU consumer law.

How do you know it is working?

It is working when assistants describe you accurately and cite sources you recognise.

  • Rerun the same buyer questions every quarter and count fewer factual errors.

  • Check whether your replies, help pages or recent reviews appear among the cited sources.

  • Listen for whether assistants describe you with your own core idea rather than a generic category line.

  • Watch for review volume that grows steadily, not in spikes.

Compare several runs, because answers vary and assistants cite at different rates. ChatGPT cites sources in 96 per cent of responses, Gemini in 82 per cent and Claude in 55 per cent (Muck Rack, 2026). For how this changes search itself, see what Google AI Mode means for brand discovery.

What does this mean for your brand?

  • Treat third-party talk as brand work. What people write about you is now part of how AI describes you.

  • Map before you post. Know which forums and review sites the assistants cite in your category.

  • Show up as yourself. Named accounts, real answers, no disguises.

  • Fix sources, not symptoms. Trace every error back to the page that caused it.

  • Make the brand easy to repeat. A clear idea travels further than any reply.

Frequently asked questions

Should our brand post on Reddit?

Yes, if your category is discussed there and you can answer openly. Use a clearly named account, follow each community's rules and reply to questions rather than starting promotional threads.

Does AI use Reddit for training or only for answers?

It uses Reddit for both. Assistants cite Reddit threads in their answers. Google reportedly also pays Reddit to use its content for training its models, according to Reuters in 2024.

Can we remove negative reviews from AI answers?

You cannot remove them directly. You can report reviews that break platform rules, correct factual errors at the source and reply to criticism, so the assistant finds your answer next to the complaint.

How long does it take to change what AI says?

Plan in quarters, not weeks. Threads and review profiles build slowly, and assistants refresh their sources at different paces.

Where does better AI visibility start?

It starts with knowing what assistants say about you and which sources they trust. Then you answer, correct and earn reviews in the open, until the honest picture is also the most visible one. If you want help getting there, write to us at hello@iwagency.com.
