The best brand agency in Sweden: how to judge fit, proof and candour

Quick answer

Which is the best brand agency in Sweden?

There is no single best brand agency in Sweden. The best one for you has solved a problem like yours, can show it in published cases and will tell you the truth. Creative awards judge craft and size rankings measure revenue; neither shows whether an agency can move your brand. At IW Agency, we think "best" should be judged by business effect, using three tests: fit with your problem and category, proof of what the problem was, what was done and what changed, and candour about what you don't need. An agency that fails any of them is a risk, however good its showreel looks.

Which is the best brand agency in Sweden?

The best brand agency in Sweden is the one whose published cases show it has solved a problem like yours, with a team that will tell you the truth. There is no single winner. Creative awards judge the craft of the work. Size rankings measure revenue. Neither tells you whether an agency can move your brand.

At IW Agency, we think "best" should be judged by business effect, not by trophies or aesthetics. We are a brand agency ourselves, so read this with that in mind. We won't ask you to take a claim on faith. Instead, here is how to judge any agency, us included.

We use three tests:

  • Fit: has the agency solved your kind of problem, in your kind of category?

  • Proof: can it show what the problem was, what it did and what changed?

  • Candour: will it tell you when you don't need what you came to buy?

An agency that passes all three is the best one for you, whatever its size or reputation. One that fails any of them is a risk, however good its showreel looks.

Conclusion: The best agency is the one with proof of your problem.

What does a brand agency do that an advertising agency doesn't?

A brand agency decides what a brand stands for and how it looks, sounds and behaves everywhere. An advertising agency mainly creates the campaigns that sell it. The two overlap, but they start in different places. A campaign answers "what do we say this quarter?" A brand answers "why should anyone choose us at all?"

We work across five capabilities: Strategy, Design, Comms, Digital and Innovation. We think they belong together. A positioning that never reaches the pack, the website or the AI answer is only a document.

In practice, a brand agency's work covers:

  • strategy and positioning, often captured in a brand platform

  • brand architecture for portfolios, mergers and new launches

  • visual identity and a brand design system that scales

  • packaging, tone of voice and digital experience

  • brand innovation: new products, services and growth areas

If you mainly need media buying or performance campaigns, a brand agency is the wrong purchase. For more on the role itself, see what a brand agency does.

When do you need a brand agency?

You need a brand agency when the question on your desk is about what the brand is, not how to promote it this month. The triggers are usually structural. A merger. A demerger. A portfolio that has grown messy. A brand people still recognise but no longer choose.

Common moments, with cases:

  1. A new company is formed. When Enfo demerged part of its organisation into a new data consultancy, that company needed a brand of its own. It became Epical.

  2. A classic needs renewed relevance. For Ballerina, the Swedish cookie, the task was to breathe new life into the brand. Our guide to the early warning signs of a brand losing relevance covers what to watch for.

  3. Private labels copy you. Göteborgskex faced a category crowded with imitations of Swedish cookie classics.

  4. The portfolio needs structure. We have worked with Arla since 2007 to evolve its product portfolio.

  5. The organisation speaks with many voices. For Region Stockholm, the task was to give a large public organisation one clear regional voice. The work included a custom multilingual typeface and a dynamic layout design system.

We think the costliest mistake is to wait until decline shows up in sales. Sales tend to be the last place a fading brand appears.

How do you judge a brand agency's work before you hire it?

Judge an agency by cases that state the problem, what was done and what changed, in a situation close to yours. A beautiful portfolio proves taste. A clear case proves thinking.

When you read an agency's case pages, look for four things:

  • A real problem. "Refresh the brand" is a brief. "Private labels are copying our packs" is a problem.

  • A decision, not only design. What did the agency keep, change or drop, and why?

  • Reach across touchpoints. Does the idea live on packaging, digital and in the organisation, or stop at a logo?

  • Relevance to you. Food, public sector, tech and industry each have their own constraints.

We think a case that shows its constraint is worth more than one that only shows the finished film. Take Lucky Bait. In Sweden's strictly regulated beer market, all alcohol is sold through Systembolaget. That shaped the whole job. Our guide to building brands in regulated markets explains how a brand grows under those rules.

Ask to see the two or three cases closest to your situation. Then ask who on the agency's team actually did them.

What should you ask a brand agency before choosing one?

Ask questions that reveal how the agency thinks, who will do the work and how it defines success. Credentials decks look alike. Answers to hard questions don't.

  1. What problem do you think we actually have? A good agency will challenge your brief.

  2. Which of your cases is closest to ours, and what was hard about it?

  3. Who will work with us day to day? Meet them, not only the pitch team.

  4. How do you connect strategy to design? Ask to see the line from insight to identity.

  5. How will we know it worked? Expect business measures: choice, preference, price, recruitment.

  6. What would you advise us not to do? Candour here is a good sign.

We think chemistry matters, but it is no substitute for proof. A brand project runs for months and touches the whole organisation. You need a partner who can disagree with you, kindly and with reasons.

Conclusion: Hire the agency that disagrees with you for good reasons.

What does a rebrand or a brand platform cost, and how long does it take?

The cost and timeline of a brand project depend on scope. That means how many brands, markets and touchpoints it covers, and how much research it needs. A focused positioning for one brand is a different job from a new architecture for a global portfolio. Be wary of any price quoted before the agency understands which job you have.

The main cost drivers are:

  • The question itself: positioning only, or positioning, identity and rollout.

  • Brands and markets: architecture work multiplies with each one.

  • Research and testing: interviews, data and prototypes with real customers.

  • Rollout: packaging, digital, signage and internal launch.

We think rollout deserves as much budget attention as the creative work. An identity that only half reaches the market weakens the brand it was meant to build.

Our guide to how a brand agency works with innovation, and what a project costs breaks down phases and timelines. If you are unsure whether you need a new platform at all, start with what a brand platform is and when you need a new one.

Does AI change what you should look for in a brand agency?

Yes. AI makes design production cheaper, so an agency's value moves to judgement and distinction. It also moves to how the brand is described when AI assistants answer for it. An agency that only produces assets competes with software. One that helps you decide what to stand for does not.

We think clarity, recognition and feeling matter more when assistants mediate choices, not less. An assistant can only recommend a brand it can describe in a sentence. A person scrolling the answer still chooses on feeling.

Ask any agency how it handles three things:

The Google case started from that tension. As AI increasingly shaped public debate, Google wanted to offer a more human perspective on technology at Almedalen.

Conclusion: Software makes assets. Agencies should help you make decisions.

How does IW Agency work, and where has it shown it?

IW Agency works across Strategy, Design, Comms, Digital and Innovation from one office in Stockholm. Our clients are across Sweden, the Nordics and internationally. The agency was founded in 1992 as Identity Works and became IW Agency in May 2025; the story of the new name explains the change. Today we are around 50 people.

Many of our cases are in food and FMCG, alongside public sector, NGOs, tech and industry. A few, grouped by the problem behind them:

  • Renewing a heritage brand: Lurpak, built on 120 years of craft heritage, needed to evolve and become future-ready. Kungsörnen and Champis faced related questions.

  • Restoring relevance: Svenska kyrkan risked losing cultural relevance as new generations formed different relationships to faith.

  • Clarity for a cause: SOS Barnbyar needed a clearer way to communicate as donors demanded clarity and transparency.

  • Industry and infrastructure: Grundfos sharpened its global position. Jernhusen is Sweden's largest railway real estate company.

  • From generic to premium: Nordic Nest began as Designonline.com, a generic online shop that needed to become a premium brand experience.

We think these cases say more than anything we could claim about ourselves. Read the ones closest to your situation on our work page. If none of them fit, we are probably not your best choice, and we would rather tell you so.

What does this mean for your brand?

  • Define the problem before the shortlist. Write one sentence on what is wrong. Agencies who sharpen it are worth meeting.

  • Shortlist on proof, not reputation. Pick three agencies with published cases close to your category or situation.

  • Meet the people who will do the work. The pitch team and the delivery team are not always the same.

  • Agree on business measures upfront. Choice, preference, price and recruitment beat "looks fresher".

  • Budget for rollout from day one. The identity is only as strong as its weakest touchpoint.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official ranking of the best brand agencies in Sweden?

No ranking measures which brand agency is best for a specific company. Awards judge creative work, and lists based on size measure scale. Use them as signals, then judge each agency's cases against your own problem.

Should you run a pitch to choose a brand agency?

A pitch helps when you are comparing agencies with similar proof. Keep it short and share a real problem. We think a paid workshop on your actual question tells you more than a free speculative pitch.

Should you choose a Swedish brand agency or an international network?

Choose a Swedish agency when your core market is Swedish or Nordic and you want senior people close to the work. Choose a network when you need local execution in many markets at once. A Stockholm agency can still lead international work; Arla and Lurpak are examples from our own cases.

What is the difference between a brand agency and a design agency?

A brand agency starts with strategy: what the brand stands for, who it is for and how it differs. A design agency focuses on the visual expression of those choices. Many agencies do both. See what a design agency does for the distinction.

Can a brand agency help with AI visibility?

Yes, when the work covers how the brand is described, not just how it looks. AI assistants repeat clear, consistent descriptions. A brand agency can make your positioning, website and content say the same thing in words an assistant can lift.

Do you need a full rebrand or a refresh?

Refresh when your positioning still holds and only the expression has aged. Rebrand when the business, audience or strategy has changed. Our guide to modernising a heritage brand shows how to decide what to keep.
